Across India, an Anganwadi worker may spend her morning teaching preschool children, monitoring their nutrition, maintaining government records, preparing meals, and counselling parents – all before the day is halfway through. Given the sheer breadth of these responsibilities, it is easy to assume that the greatest challenge facing India’s early childhood system is simply a lack of time.
But what if the real challenge is not time alone?
Reducing administrative burden is important, yet creating more time does not automatically translate into better learning experiences for children. The quality of early childhood education depends not only on how much time Anganwadi workers have, but on how they engage with children, facilitate play-based learning, respond to children’s needs, and continuously strengthen their own practice through coaching and feedback.
This distinction becomes especially important during the earliest years of life. Neuroscience tells us that nearly 85% of a child’s brain develops before the age of six, laying the foundation for lifelong learning. A thoughtfully facilitated storytelling session, an engaging play activity, or a meaningful conversation can strengthen cognitive, language, and socio-emotional development in ways that no worksheet or routine task can.
As India continues to strengthen its early childhood ecosystem through nearly 1.4 million Anganwadi centres serving around 77 million children, an important question emerges: How should we define success? Should success be measured by activities completed and messages delivered, or by what truly matters – children developing foundational skills and entering school ready to thrive?
Technology has undoubtedly expanded the possibilities for reaching frontline workers at an unprecedented scale. Digital platforms can deliver learning resources instantly, provide timely reminders, standardise training content, and reduce the friction involved in accessing information. Yet technology has its limits.
While technology can deliver content, it cannot observe classroom interactions or provide the personalised guidance educators need to strengthen their practice. While technology can promote consistency and participation, it cannot replace the trust, encouragement, and contextual guidance that effective mentoring provides. Lasting improvements in classroom practice require a combination of digital support and human connection.
