Meet Neha Gautam, a seasoned professional whose journey reflects dedication and resilience. Hailing from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Neha’s path to Senior Associate of Employee Experience at Rocket Learning is shaped by her family’s legacy in early childhood education. From Mumbai International Business School to Noida and Nairobi, Neha’s story is a blend of personal triumphs and professional growth, rooted in a commitment to making a difference for future generations.
Q. Neha, could you share a bit about your background and journey to Rocket Learning?
Certainly! Originally from Lucknow, UP, I pursued an MBA in HR from Mumbai International Business School. After some time working in Mumbai and Noida, I embarked on a new chapter when I married and relocated to Nairobi with my husband. It was through a friend’s referral that I discovered an opportunity with Rocket Learning, a remote HR position that instantly intrigued me.
Q. Your transition to Rocket Learning seems serendipitous. How did your upbringing influence your interest in early childhood education, especially considering your family’s involvement in the field?
My family background, particularly my mother’s work in Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), provided me with early exposure to the realm of childhood education. Accompanying her to Anganwadi centers during my childhood instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of early learning initiatives. This, combined with my own experiences as a mother, fueled my passion for supporting educational endeavors, particularly in underprivileged communities.
Q. Neha, your journey reflects resilience, especially considering a five-year career break. Could you share more about that phase and your return to the workforce?
The hiatus was challenging, navigating both personal and professional transitions. Stepping away from the workforce for five years, primarily to focus on family and motherhood, presented its own set of complexities. However, returning to work, especially with Rocket Learning’s supportive environment, was a blessing. Despite the initial hurdles, the opportunity to contribute again reignited my enthusiasm for HR and employee experience.
During my break, the importance of family-centered policies became glaringly apparent. Rocket Learning’s commitment to work-life balance, coupled with progressive policies, played a significant role in easing my transition back to the workforce. The organization’s no-questions-asked leave policy, which extends beyond traditional maternal and paternal leave, provided much-needed flexibility during my return.
I know for my colleague who works out of the office, Rocket Learning’s provision to cover costs of creche facilities, and the option to bring her child to work, when necessary, exemplifies the organization’s dedication to supporting working parents. These initiatives not only alleviate the challenges of balancing work and family life but also foster a culture of inclusivity and support for all employees navigating similar journeys.
Q. The People and Culture Team’s ideas seems innovative. Can you highlight some unique policies or initiatives that set the organization apart, particularly in terms of diversity and inclusion?
At Rocket Learning, we’re all about walking the talk when it comes to diversity and inclusion. Take our gender-neutral policy, for instance—it’s right there in our POSH guidelines. We’re firm believers that everyone, regardless of gender identity or orientation, should feel safe and respected at work.
But you know, it’s not just about ticking boxes. Bringing in a diverse bunch is one thing, but making sure everyone feels included? Now, that’s the real challenge. That’s why we keep hammering home the importance of diversity and inclusion in our onboarding sessions. We want every single person to know they belong here.
And our commitment doesn’t stop at hiring. We’re all about investing in our team, whether it’s through training sessions led by folks like Miss Vasundhara, a DEI expert from London, or by creating an environment where everyone, including LGBTQ folks and people with disabilities, feels seen and supported. Because let’s face it, diversity without inclusion? It’s just not worth it. We’re all about making sure every voice is heard and every person feels valued.
Q. Neha, your insights into HR industry within the nonprofit sector are invaluable. What advice would you offer to aspiring professionals navigating this space?
My advice would be to prioritize adaptability and empathy. Working in the nonprofit sector demands a nuanced approach to team dynamics and stakeholder engagement. Embracing diversity, both in talent and perspective, is key to driving meaningful impact in this space.
Q. Thank you, Neha, for sharing your journey and insights with us. Is there anything else you’d like to add before we wrap up?
I’d like to express my gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to Rocket Learning’s mission and for the supportive work culture that enables personal and professional growth. It’s truly fulfilling to be part of a team that values diversity, collaboration, and continuous learning.
